Marseil E. Somi

E1aMarseil E. Somi has been a licensed California attorney since 2016. She earned her juris doctor degree and a Certificate in International Legal Studies from Loyola University, New Orleans, College of Law. She obtained her bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

While in law school she held internships related to immigration law and she served as a student practitioner for two semesters, where she practiced law under the supervision of a licensed attorney in the Immigration Law Clinic, at the Stuart H. Smith Law Clinic and Center for Social Justice.

Upon graduating from law school, she worked as a staff attorney at a local law firm here in Los Angeles, where she successfully represented immigrants in removal proceedings in most difficult cases involving complex immigration law. She has also convinced the Board of Immigration Appeals to reopen proceeding and remand a case which had been previously denied.

Immigration law has many facets. Attorney Somi has been actively involved in the areas of political asylum, removal defense, criminal immigration cases, family based petition and non-immigrant visas. She has unending patience with difficult cases and is committed to her clients and works tirelessly to represent their best interest.

Adam L. Fleming
Adam L. Fleming has been a licensed New York attorney since 2013. In 2006, he graduated summa cum laude from the University of Pittsburgh with a bachelor’s degree in English writing. In 2012, he graduated magna cum laude from Brooklyn Law School.

Adam has extensive experience with immigration law. Before joining the Law Offices of Gihan L. Thomas, he was a judicial law clerk with the Board of Immigration Appeals. Prior to that, he clerked for the Buffalo and Batavia Immigration Courts in Western New York. Through these clerkships Adam gained invaluable knowledge related to deportation/removal defense.

While in law school, Adam held numerous internships related to immigration. He studied employment immigration law as an intern with the prestigious law firm Satterlee Stephens Burke & Burke LLP. He developed his skills related to asylum law at Brooklyn Law School’s Safe Harbor Clinic. With the immigration unit of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York, Adam learned various aspects of naturalization law and civil detention. Adam also interned with the Elizabeth Immigration Court in New Jersey, Magistrate Judge Ramon E. Reyes, Jr., in the Eastern District of New York, and the offices of New York Assemblyman Steven Cymbrowitz.

Adam is admitted to practice in the Fourth Judicial Department of the Appellate Division of the New York State Supreme Court and the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

Gihan Thomas is a California State Bar Certified Specialist in Immigration & Nationality Law. She has obtained her bachelor degree in English and American Literature from Alexandria University. She obtained her Juris Doctor degree from University of West Los Angeles in 1998. She has been practicing law for the past twenty (20) years. Her practice focuses exclusively since her admission on US Immigration Law.

Attorney Thomas experience over the years focused on both immigrant and nonimmigrant visas. She has handled family petitions, fiancée visas, consular processing, labor certifications, business visas, investment visas and employment based petitions.

Attorney Thomas has also represented thousands of immigrants before the Immigration Courts in filing asylums, cancellation of removals, suspension of deportation, adjustment of status and waivers for grounds of inadmissibility applications. She has also represented her clients before the Board of Immigration Appeals in filing appeals and motions to reopen. She is respected as a well talented aggressive litigator, highly experienced with asylum cases. Her depth knowledge of the immigration field has brought this green card attorney to impressive results for her clients over the years.

Attorney Thomas has argued many cases before the Ninth Circuit and Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals and has a winning record in her federal appellate review cases. Viridiana v. Holder 646 F.3d 1230 (9th Cir. 2011) sets a record in tolling the statute of limitation for asylum seekers victimized by immigration consultants that resulted in their failure to meet the one year statutorily deadline; Sumolang v. Holder, 723 F.3d 1080 (9th Cir. 2013), which extended asylum to a parent based on the harm occurring solely to the child and Chandra v. Holder 751 F.3d 1034 (9th Cir. 2014), wherein the Court held that personal change circumstances may warrant a reopening of a removal order, as it relates to change country conditions.

Attorney Thomas continues to argue cases at the Ninth Circuit. She is the Liaison on Federal Litigation with the American Immigration Lawyers Association, Southern California Chapter. She was selected as a Super Lawyer for Immigration and Nationality Law for the years 2015-2018.

She was also voted as Top Women Attorneys in Southern California for 2015 through 2018 by the Los Angeles Magazine.

Matthew Walter

Matthew R. Walter is a licensed Illinois attorney since 2007. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from Indiana University and his Juris Doctor degree from Loyola University Chicago. While in law school, he was a judicial extern for the Hon. Wayne Andersen of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.

He worked for over 8 years as an immigration officer for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services where he developed expertise in asylum, refugee, and family-based immigration.

He has traveled extensively throughout Africa, Asia, and the Middle East to interview refugees, and he served as an Overseas Adjudications Officer in Bangkok, Thailand.

He was also selected to be a legal intern for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Western Law Division in Los Angeles where he drafted briefs to the Board of Immigration Appeals. Matthew brings an insider’s perspective of USCIS that is an asset for his clients.
